Cole’s Career Day Leads Spartans at NSU Invitational

NORFOLK, Va. – Kai Cole notched a pair of personal records on Saturday, making the most of his senior day at the 2023 NSU Invitational at William "Dick" Price Stadium.
 
Norfolk State celebrated 10 seniors from the men's track and field program during the team's home meet: Cole, Evans Cheruiyot, Joseph Abiakam, Antaeveon Payne, Dazon Harrison, Rayquan Smith, Maurice Brown, Anthony Franklin, Sadiq Nurse, and Regan Kimtai.
 
Cole won both individual events he competed in on Saturday, recording the fastest times of his career in a Spartan uniform. The sprinter crushed the competition with a 10.24 in the 100 meter dash, following that performance up with a 20.76 in the 200 meter dash. His previous PR's were 10.28 and 20.77 respectively.
 
Franklin trailed closely behind in the 100 meter dash, finishing in 10.40 seconds to take third place.
 
The Spartans opened the day with dominance in the 1500 meters. Kimtai won the event in 3:53.32, while Sigei (3:59.43) and Jumo (3:59.82) earning second and third. Norfolk State took four of the top five positions, with Brian Rotich (4:04.95) coming in fifth.
 
Dwight Henry joined Cole and Kimtai in the winner's circle, posting a 14.46 in the 110 meter hurdles to earn first place. Joshua Sutton nabbed fourth in 14.55 seconds.
 
Henry showed off his versatility on Saturday, shining in both track and field events. His 139-foot, 10-inch heave in the javelin throw was good enough for fourth place, and marked a personal record for the junior.
 
In another strong senior day performance, Rayquan Smith set a personal record in the hammer throw with a toss of 145 feet, six inches, to finish fourth, while his brother, Raeshon Smith, took sixth by recording 133-4. The former also set a PR in the long jump (22-5.).
 
Harrison took fourth in the 400 meters with a time of 48.22, while Jeremiah Zellander's 48.66 earned sixth. Zellander combined with Kimtai, Wynder-Hill, and Knasir Alston to notch second place in the 4x400 meter relay (3:18.60).
 
Camren Wynder-Hill logged a fourth-place finish in the long jump with a 23-foot, 0.5-inch leap. Joshua Peterson took sixth at 22-6.5, also finishing seventh in the high jump (6-1.5)
 
The Spartans' 4x100 meter relay team (Cole, Franklin, Bryan-Madison Ahouman, Henry) finished third with a time of 47.36.
