VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. --- The Norfolk State men's track and field team returned to action following the holiday break with a strong showing at the VCU Rams Indoor Invite at the Virginia Beach Sports Complex on Sunday.
Senior
Jahquan Christopher won the only individual running event of the day with a first-place finish in the 500 meters (1:04.31 – personal best). Senior
Isaac Haywood won triple jump (49-7.75), while
Jaymes Saunders won the long jump (23-8.75).
The team of
Premier Wynn,
Kendrick Winfield,
Tafari Bishop, and Christopher picked up the second event win of the day for the Spartans in the 4x400 relay, clocking a time of 3:13.52. The team of
Julian Ward,
Donovan Terry,
Devin Mosley, and
Lavontay Bond followed right behind, taking second place (3:13.52)
Norfolk State produced a strong showing in the 60 meters led by graduate
Bryan-Madison Ahouman finishing in second place with a time of 6.88. He was followed by Terry (6.89-third place), sophomore
Antoinne Smith (6.90–fourth place), and Ward (6.94–fifth place).
The Spartans also had three top five finishers in the 200 meters with sophomore
Christopher Basking earning a second-place finish (21.85), while Bond followed closely behind, taking third place (21.95).
Antoinne Smith rounded out the NSU finishers in the 200-meters, clocking a time of 22.08 to take fifth place.
In the 400 meters, Winfield led the way, recording a second-place finish (48.65). Wynn came in third place just seconds behind Winfield (49.09). Junior Mosley ran a personal best time of 50.54 in the same event to place sixth.
Norfolk State also had strong performances in the 60-meter hurdles with James Saunders taking third place (8.19) and the 3,000 meters with
Gidion Sigei earning second place (8.23.42).
In field events,
Chazden Wilson jumped to a second-place finish in the high jump (6-4.75), while
Jayden Gordon took third place in the triple jump (47-3.75). Haywood also posted a second place finish in the long jump (23-7.25).
Norfolk State will return to action at the HBCU Showcase on Saturday, Jan. 18 in New York, N.Y.
