NEW YORK, N.Y. --- The Norfolk State men's track team won the HBCU Showcase on Saturday with 126.5 points.
Florida A&M (62), Coppin State (51), Hampton (46), and Prairie View A&M (43.5) rounded out the top five teams.
The distance team picked up a pair of wins on the day, with
Victor Jumo winning the mile (4:19.62) and
Gidion Sigei taking first in the 3,000 meters (8:31.18). Sigei also clocked a second-place finish in the mile (4:19.69).
In the 4x400 relay, the team of
Premier Wynn,
Kendrick Winfield,
Tafari Bishop, and
Vincent Bond Jr. picked up a first-place finish with a time of 3:11.44.
In the 400 meters, NSU placed three runners in the top eight led by Wynn, taking second (47.93). Bond Jr. followed closely behind, clocking a time of 48.11 to place third, while Winfield took eighth place (48.55).
Freshman
Julian Ward earned a third-place finish in the 200 meters, finishing the race with a time of 21.55.
Lavontay Bond clocked a fourth-place finish in the same event (21.79).
Graduate sprinter
Bryan-Madison Ahouman crossed the finish line in 6.84 to place fourth place in the 60-meters, tying his personal best, while
Jaymes Saunders earned a fifth-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles (8.10).
Jahquan Christopher also earned a second-place finish in the 500 meters (1:04.35).
Isaac Haywood led the Spartans in field events, logging a second-place jump in the triple jump (50-1.75). Kristopher Stevens earned a ninth-place finish in the same event (46-5.25). Saunders also earned a second-place finish in the long jump (23-8.75). Haywood followed behind with a third-place finish in the same event (23-6.75 – personal best) while
Camren Wynder-Hill placed seventh (22-9).
Norfolk State recorded a pair of sixth-place finishes with Saunders in the high jump (6-2.75) and
Andwele Shurland in the pole vault (12-11.5).
Chazden Wilson also earned an eighth-place finish in the high jump (6-0.75).
Sophomore
Troy McWilliams led the Spartans in throwing categories, placing fourth in the weight throw (50-10.25).
Raeshon Smith threw for a fifth-place finish in the same event (48-10.75).
Norfolk State will return to action on Friday, Jan. 24 at the Penn State National in University Park, Pa.
