VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. --- The Norfolk State men's track & field team put on a show at the MEAC Indoor Championships, claiming its fourth consecutive title.
The Spartans won the event with 202 total points. Howard followed in second (106 points) while Coppin State took third (82 points).
Senior
Victor Jumo earned most outstanding runner accolades, winning three events: the 5,000 meters (14:49.63), 3,000 meters (8:20.91), and mile (4:11.27).
"Everyone contributed to this program's success," Director of Track & Field Programs
Kenneth Giles said. "We couldn't have done it without outstanding coaching and a support staff. We showed that we can compete with some of the best programs in the country this weekend."
NSU also broke three school records at the event, including
Troy McWilliams in the weight throw (56-00),
Jaymes Saunders in the heptathlon (5,031 points), and
Kendrick Winfield in the 200 meters (20.66).
Norfolk State dominated the 400 meters, taking all three spots on the podium with Winfield leading the way (46.23).
Premier Wynn followed in second (46.64), while
Vincent Bond Jr. took third (46.78).
Winfield also won the 200 meters (20.66), with
Julian Ward taking fourth (21.55) and Wynn earning seventh place (21.98).
The Spartans distance team put on a show in the 5,000 meters, earning all three medals with Jumo leading the way (14:49.63).
Gidion Sigei clocked a time of 14:50.47 to place second while
Brian Rotich finished third (14:52.06).
Lewis Too also earned a top five finish, taking fourth (15:10.99) while
Basil Koech rounded out the Spartans' finishers in the 5,000 meters, earning sixth (15:50.62).
Sigei also earned a bronze medal in the mile, clocking a time of 4:14.15. Rotich came in fourth place just behind Sigei with a time of 4:15.55, while Too earned sixth place (4:18.72).
The team of
Tafari Bishop, Winfield, Wynn, and Bond earned a gold medal in the 4x400 relay with a time of 3:08.66.
NSU also posted a pair of strong finishes in the 60 meters, led by
Donovan Terry taking seventh (6.92) and
Antoinne Smith taking eighth (6.96).
Norfolk State earned multiple gold medals in field events, with McWilliams winning the weight throw (56-00) and
Isaac Haywood winning the triple jump (44-11).
Raeshon Smith took fourth in the weight throw (50-1.25), while
Kristopher Stephens took 10th place in the triple jump (44-11).
The Spartans now turn their attention to the NCAA Indoor Championships, taking place March 14-15 at the Virginia Beach Sports Complex.
