VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. --- The Norfolk State men's track team broke a long-standing school record with an impressive performance at the East Coast Invitational at the Virginia Beach Sports Complex Friday and Saturday.
The 4x400 relay team made of
Premier Wynn,
Kendrick Winfield,
Vincent Bond Jr., and
Tafari Bishop took down the school record that has been standing since 1999 with a time of 3:07.75.
Senior
Brian Rotich led Norfolk State in individual events, picking up a win in the 3,000 meters with a time of 8:27.08 on Friday afternoon. Sophomore
Basil Koech also posted a top five finish in the same event, placing fourth with a time of 8:58.31.
Antoinne Smith picked up a fifth-place finish in the 60 meters (6.90) while
Bryan-Madison Ahouman followed right behind, earning sixth place (6.93).
NSU posted a pair of top 10 finishes and personal best times in the mile with
Victor Jumo leading the way with an eighth-place finish (4:12.91).
Gidion Sigei followed right behind Jumo, clocking a time of 4:13.12 to place ninth in the same event.
Tafari Bishop led the way in the 400 meters, finishing with a personal best time of 48.07 to take ninth place. Winfield followed with a 10th place finish, clocking a time of 48.13.
Julian Ward (48.70) placed 13th while
Jahquan Christopher (49.12) earned 15th place in the same event to round out four top 15 finishes.
Saunders qualified for the 60-meter hurdle finals on day two, taking eighth place with a time of 8.79. NSU picked up four top 10 finishes in the 200-meter dash with Wynn leading the way, placing fourth (21.45). Bond Jr. followed in fifth place (21.47),
Christopher Basking in seventh place (21.77) and
Lavontay Bond in ninth place (21.91).
Freshman
Landon Walker made his Norfolk State debut, taking fourth place in the pole vault (14-5).
Camren Wynder-Hill followed with a sixth-place finish (9-0.25) in the same event.
Cazden Wilson,
Jaymes Saunders, and
Jayden Gordon tied for fifth place in the high jump (6-4.75).
Kristopher Stephens and
Isaac Haywood also tied for eighth place in the same event (6-2.75).
Troy McWilliams led the way in the weight throw, taking 13th place (51-0.75) while Gordon rounded out the first day of field events with a fourth-place finish in the long jump (21-8.5).
NSU picked up four top five finishes on day two in the triple jump, led by Saunders in second (46-5.75). Wynder-Hill followed in third (45-11.75), Stephens in fourth (45-7) and Gordon in fifth (45-5.5).
Norfolk State returns to action next weekend in the Indoor Pre-Nationals, taking place in Virginia Beach, Virginia. The two-day event starts on Friday, February 14.
