NORFOLK, Va. --- The Norfolk State track and field teams aims to close out the 2024-25 campaign on a high note at the MEAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships, taking place on Thursday, May 15 and ending on Saturday, May 17.

The Event
The MEAC Outdoor Championships will be held on the campus of Norfolk State University at William "Dick" Price Stadium.

Thursday's competition begins at 1 p.m. with the men's decathlon and concludes with the men's 10,000 meters.
Â
Friday's schedule resumes at 9 a.m. with the continuation of the men's decathlon and the start of the women's heptathlon, concluding with the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase.

Championship Saturday opens at 10 a.m. with the women's pole vault and wraps up with the men's 4x400 meter relay. ESPN+ will broadcast the final day of action, beginning at 1 p.m.

All eight MEAC track and field institutions will compete: Norfolk State, Coppin State, Delaware State, Howard, Maryland Eastern Shore, Morgan State, North Carolina Central, and South Carolina State.

Outlook – Norfolk State Men
The Norfolk State men's team is aiming for its fourth consecutive MEAC outdoor title, which would complete a fourth straight sweep of the MEAC cross country, indoor, and outdoor championships.

NSU dominated the championship with 203 points across the three-day meet. Senior
Victor Jumo earned Most Outstanding Runner honors, and head coach
Kenneth Giles received Most Outstanding Coach accolades in 2024.

The Spartans have produced a successful season leading up to the championships, setting three school records during the outdoor season.
Troy McWilliams opened the outdoor season by setting the new school record in the hammer throw (184-1) at the USF Season Opener.

A pair of school records fell at the Penn Relays, beginning with
Gidion Sigei taking down his own school and MEAC record in the 10,000 meters with a time of 29:07.85. The 4x400 meter relay team consisting of
Kendrick Winfield,
Vincent Bond Jr.,
Donovan Terry, and
Tafari Bishop clocked a time of 3:05.07, taking down the school record. The time also ranks 22nd in the nation.

NSU has also seen national success this season, ranking inside the top 50 in multiple events. Bond clocked a time of 45.91 in the 400 meters that currently ranks 17th in the nation. Wynn ranks 20th in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 50.70, while Winfield holds a time of 20.75 to rank 38th in the 200 meters.

The men's squad have earned three MEAC Runner of the Week honors this season, with Wynn, Winfield, and Sigei each receiving the accolade.

Outlook- Norfolk State Women's
The Norfolk State women's squad seeks its first outdoor championship since the 2011 season. NSU earned a runner up finish in last year's meet, while Howard won its third consecutive outdoor title.

Seniors
Mercyline Kimaiyo and
Leslie Young aim to continue their individual dominance, each having earned MEAC Most Outstanding Runner and Most Outstanding Field Athlete accolades in the past two outdoor championships.

The Spartans took down a pair of school records this season, beginning with
D'Nysha Brightful taking down the pole vault record (11-1.75). The 4x400 relay team consisting of
Kalyncia Taylor,
Kadynce Taylor,
Autumn Burrell, and
Leanna Lewis also took down the relay record that had stood for nearly 20 years with a time of 3:40.44 at the Penn Relays.

Junior
Brooklyn Robinson has led the Spartans in running events this season, currently ranking inside of the top 25 in the nation in the 100-meter hurdles. She currently holds a top time of 13.25, which sits as the 22nd best time in the nation this season.

Robinson received MEAC Runner of the Week accolades while teammate Young received MEAC Field Athlete of the Week honors following their performances at the NSU Invitational earlier this season.

The MEAC announced its MEAC Outdoor Track & Field All-Academic Teams on Tuesday afternoon, and NSU had 17 student-athletes represented:

MEAC sophomore, junior, and senior student-athletes with a 3.0 or better cumulative grade point average, as well as transfer student-athletes who have been in residence at the institution for at least one year, are eligible for all-academic accolades.
