NORFOLK, Va. --- The Norfolk State men's track and field team strengthened its position atop the leaderboard on day two of the MEAC Outdoor Championships, closing Friday's competition with 84 points. North Carolina Central sits in second with 62, followed by Delaware State with 39.
Junior
Troy McWilliams captured the Spartans' lone gold medal of the day, dominating the hammer throw with a toss of 171 feet, 0.8 inches.
Freshman
Lewis Too delivered a standout performance in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, recording a personal best 9:23.80 to place second. Teammate
Basil Koech followed closely behind in third, clocking a time of 9:51.93.
Jaymes Saunders qualified for Saturday's 110-meter hurdle finals, placing eighth with a personal best time of 14.29. He also took fourth in the long jump with a leap of 24 feet, 7.75 inches.
The Spartans produced a strong showing in the 400-meter prelims, qualifying three runners for the finals.
Premier Wynn led the group with a personal best time of 46.00 to win the event.
Vincent Bond Jr. placed second (46.86), while
Kendrick Winfield took fourth (47.40).
NSU earned a pair of spots in Saturday's final for the 100 meters, led by
Christopher Basking in fifth place (10.30), while
Antoinne Smith followed in seventh (10.43).
Victor Jumo rounded out NSU's running event qualifiers, taking eighth in the 800 meters with a season best time of 1:53.88.
Kristopher Stephens hit a personal best mark in the long jump (23-0.4), while
Atrell Williams and
Raeshon Smith placed fifth (51-7.75) and seventh (48-4.5), respectively, in the shot put.
The conclusion of the MEAC Outdoor Track Meet is set for tomorrow, beginning with the triple jump at 10 a.m.
