NORFOLK, Va. — The Norfolk State men's track and field team produced multiple event victories and strong finishes across the board at the NSU Invitational on Saturday at William "Dick" Price Stadium.
Norfolk State opened the meet with solid performances in the sprints. Antoinne Smith led the Spartans in the 100 meters, placing fourth with a time of 10.41, followed by Julian Ward (eighth, 10.55) and Christopher Basking (ninth, 10.56). In the 200 meters, Kendrick Winfield paced the group with a fourth-place finish (21.13), while Ward (fifth, 21.20), Smith (seventh, 21.39), Donovan Terry (ninth, 21.42), and Lavontay Bond (12th, 21.48) added depth.
Winfield highlighted the day in the 400 meters, capturing first place with a time of 46.59. Lavontay Bond (eighth, 48.2), Terry (ninth, 48.25), and Vincent Bond Jr. (12th, 48.85) also turned in strong efforts. In the middle-distance events, Nimporembere Drogba placed fourth in the 800 meters (1:56.57), while Jemmel Green finished fifth (1:56.97).
The Spartans dominated the distance races. Daniel Mathenge won the 1,500 meters with a time of 3:56.92, followed closely by Ian Kimutai in second (3:57.89). Lewis Too led a podium sweep in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, taking first in 9:15.32, while Green (second, 9:43.84) and Basil Koech (third, 10:00.99) completed the sweep. Mathew Kipkoech added another victory in the 5,000 meters, finishing in 15:37.95.
Norfolk State continued its success in the field events. Sean Bell claimed first place in the javelin with a throw of 50.87 meters, while Landon Walker won the pole vault (4.60m). Kristopher Stephens earned a pair of top finishes, taking first in the triple jump (14.73m) and second in the high jump (2.00m).
Norfolk State will return to action on Thursday, Apr. 11, at the Duke Invitational in Durham, N.C.
