VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Both the Norfolk State men's and women's cross country teams were victorious on Saturday at their own NSU Cross Country Invitational on the Virginia Wesleyan course.
The NSU men tallied 22 points, easily ahead of runner-up Virginia State (82). The Spartans took first, second and third places and four out of the top five in all. Junior
Hillary Cheruiyot (Eldoret, Kenya) was the men's overall winner, running the 5-mile course in 25 minutes, 49 seconds.
Dominic Luka (Marietta, N.Y.) was second in 26:09 and Jonathan Soimo (Kapsabet, Kenya) was third in 26:14.
Keenan Harris (Norfolk, Va.) and
Liam Arocho (Virginia Beach, Va.) rounded out NSU's finishers by placing fifth and 11th, respectively.
The NSU women were led by freshman
Jennifer Chichester (Silver Spring, Md.). She came in second place overall, finishing the 3.1-mile course in 19:05.
Tia Miles (Richmond, Va.) was fifth in 20:12, and
Anastacia Limo (Kapsabet, Kenya) was seventh in 20:18.
Chynell Gray (Virginia Beach, Va.) and
Candace Shoates (Newport News, Va.) rounded out the NSU women's top five by placing 15th and 21st, overall.
Both NSU teams are back in action next Saturday at the Tribe Open hosted by William & Mary.
