NORFOLK, Va. — The Norfolk State softball team split a pair of games on Sunday, dropping a 9-0 decision to Cornell in five innings and then beating St. Francis (Pa.) 10-7 at the NSU Softball Field.

Cornell (4-1) dominated every aspect of the game and posted runs in every inning. The biggest highlight of the game for the Big Red was the three-run homerun hit by Vanessa Leonhard in the bottom of the second.

Jenn Meunier pitched four and one-third no-hit, shutout innings to earn the win. She struck out four and walked three. Micki Rodriguez (Newport News, Va.) fell to 2-4 on the season after giving up six hits and eight runs (seven earned) in three and one-third innings.

The Spartans (4-11) came alive against St. Francis as they had a season-high 15 hits and scored a season-high-tying 10 runs.

Every Spartan had at least one hit with Brianeisha Eure (Virginia Beach, Va.) leading the way by going 3-for-4 with two runs, an RBI and a walk. Jacklyn Peaton (Virginia Beach, Va.) knocked in a team-high three runs.

Jerrica Smith suffered the loss after going three and one-third innings and allowing nine runs on nine hits and walking four. Sarah Wittwer (Grand Junction, Colo.) improved to 2-5 after giving up 10 hits, seven runs, walking two and striking out two in six innings of work.

The Spartans return to the NSU Softball Field on Tuesday when they host North Carolina Central in a doubleheader at 1 p.m.
