ORANGEBURG, S.C. – The Norfolk State softball team defeated South Carolina State 6-1 on Saturday at Lady Bulldog Field. The second game of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference doubleheader was called after five innings because of bad weather and will be completed on Sunday. The Lady Bulldogs had a 1-0 lead in game 2.

In game 1, NSU (14-20, 4-3 MEAC) got on the board first, scoring a run in the top of the second inning. Brianeisha Eure (Virginia Beach, Va.) scored from third on an error by center fielder Denitia Carter to put the Spartans up 1-0.

NSU scored another run in the top of the fourth on a lead-off solo home run by Rebecca Barnes (Hampton, Va.) and posted three more in the fifth to take a 5-0 lead.

South Carolina State (4-21, 0-7 MEAC) scored its only run of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning on Epiphany Davis' single to left field that scored Keisha Jameson.

Ky Brown (Woodsfield, Ohio) improved to 4-3 on the season with the win. She pitched four innings and gave up seven hits, one earned run, struck out eight, and walked six. Channell Thompson allowed 12 hits, six runs (four earned), and walked three in the losing effort.

Eure, Meghan Ramsey (Virginia Beach, Va.) and Ashley Archer (Amelia, Va.) each had two hits in game one. Tifanie Lewis went 4-for-4 for SCSU, tallying four of the team's seven hits.

The Lady Bulldogs scored the only run of the second game on an error by Archer, who has played the last four games at shortstop after starting shortstop Jewel White (Chesapeake, Va.) was injured against Florida A&M.

Sarah Wittwer (Grand Junction, Colo.) and Jeanette Sauceda (Ontario, Calif.) accounted for NSU's two hits of the game.

The two teams take the field again on Sunday at noon to complete the final two innings of game 2 and play the third game of the MEAC series.
