ORANGEBURG, S.C. – The South Carolina State softball team posted two wins on Sunday to take the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference series 2-1 from Norfolk State. The Lady Bulldogs (6-21, 2-7 MEAC) won game 2 of Saturday's doubleheader 2-1 and won 6-5 in game 3 on Sunday at Lady Bulldog Field.
The teams played the first five innings of game 2 on Saturday, but the game was stopped because of bad weather.
NSU (14-22, 4-5 MEAC) tied the game at 1-1 on an RBI single by Jeanette Sauceda (Ontario, Calif.) in the top of the sixth, but SCSU answered in the bottom of the frame and held the Spartans scoreless in the seventh to earn its first conference win of the season.
TeTreka Polite pitched seven innings, allowing four hits and one earned run to get the win. Micki Rodriguez (Newport News, Va.) gave up six hits, two runs (one earned) and struck out five in six innings to take the loss.
In the last game of the series, the Spartans jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead in the first three innings. The Lady Bulldogs scored one run in the bottom of the third to cut the lead to four, 5-1.
SCSU tied the game at 5-5 in the sixth inning and won the game in the seventh on an RBI triple by Yeshira Butler.
Polite got the win in game 3 after going six and one-third innings and giving up seven hits and three earned runs. Sarah Wittwer (Grand Junction, Colo.) pitched one inning in relief and allowed three hits and two earned runs for the loss.
Seven different Spartans had at least one hit and four had extra base hits in the last game. Sauceda, Rodriguez, Meghan Ramsey (Virginia Beach, Va.) and Ashley Archer (Amelia, Va.) each hit doubles and Rodriguez hit her first triple of the season.
The Spartans travel to Princess Anne, Md. on Wednesday to play a non-conference doubleheader against Maryland Eastern Shore. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
