Box Score
DOVER, Del. — Delaware State got home runs from Jarrett Bibb and winning pitcher James Friel, and took advantage of four Norfolk State errors in an 8-6 win on Sunday afternoon at Soldier Field.
DSU (14-22, 9-2) completed the three-game sweep of NSU (13-17, 3-9) by scoring seven unearned runs on four NSU errors to extend the Spartans' losing streak to seven games.
DSU jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first and never trailed. The first NSU error allowed a DSU run to score and prolonged the inning for Friel, who hit a three-run homer.
The Spartans cut their deficit in half in the top of the fourth. Brad Stephenson (Chesapeake, Va.) singled with two outs and scored on the fourth homer of the season by John Boyd III (Hempstead, N.Y.).
Two more Spartan miscues allowed a pair of runs to score in the bottom of the seventh, which Bibb capped with a solo homer for a 7-2 Hornets' lead.
NSU plated three runs in the eighth to get within 7-5. John Lynch (Newport News, Va.) started the rally with an RBI single, and two more runs scored thanks to Hornet errors.
But the Spartans could not close the gap further, eventually losing 8-6.
Lynch and Stephenson had two hits each for NSU. Spartan right hander Leon Schabacker (Virginia Beach, Va.) was the hard-luck loser despite not allowing an earned run. He gave up seven hits and seven runs, all unearned, whole striking out eight.
Friel (3-5) pitched eight innings to get the win. He gave up six hits and five runs, three earned. Friel walked two and fanned four. Tony Tevis pitched the ninth for his third save.
Friel, Troy Drummond and Jose Portela had two hits each for DSU.
The Spartans look to get back on track Wednesday at Longwood. Game time is 3 p.m.
