NORFOLK, Va. — The Norfolk State softball team ended its second nine-game losing streak of the season with a 4-1, 1-0 doubleheader sweep of Winston-Salem State on Saturday at the NSU Softball Field.

In the first game, NSU (18-31) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first on Jacklyn Peaton's (Virginia Beach, Va.) infield single that scored Rebecca Barnes (Hampton, Va.) and Brianeisha Eure (Virginia Beach, Va.).

The Spartans got two more runs in the fourth when WSSU left fielder Desiree Ramirez dropped a fly ball, allowing Eure and Gladys Cabeza (Corning, N.Y.) to score.

WSSU (20-28) picked up its only run of the game in the top of the seventh on a fielding error by Spartan shortstop Ashley Archer (Amelia, Va.).

Ky Brown (Woodsfield, Ohio) improved to 6-7 on the season with the five-hit, seven-inning complete game. She allowed one unearned run and struck out two batters. Amber Shore took the loss after giving up four hits and four runs (two earned) in six innings and striking out five.

The second game was far less eventful, as Jeanette Sauceda (Ontario, Calif.) drove in the only run of the game with a single up the middle in the third inning.

NSU outhit WSSU 7-3 in the second game, but the Lady Rams tallied five hits to the Spartans' four in game 1.

Micki Rodriguez (Newport News, Va.) pitched a three-hit, complete game shutout for the win. Ashley Boswell tossed all six innings, yielding seven hits and one earned run. She struck out five and walked two.

On the day, Eure led the Spartan offense by going a combined 4-for-7 and scoring three runs. In the second game, Archer was 2-for-3 with a double. For the Lady Rams, Bonkia Terry led the way, recording three hits in six at-bats.

The teams return to action for the rubber game of the series at noon on Sunday. Archer, Cabeza, Rodriguez, and Sarah Wittwer (Grand Junction, Colo.), the Spartans four seniors, will be recognized in the Senior Day ceremony prior to the game.
