NORFOLK, Va. — Michael Deloach (Rocky Mount, N.C.) and Corey Lyons (Bronx, N.Y.) combined for 48 points and nine 3-point field goals and host Norfolk State's defense helped spur the Spartans to a 72-61 win over Delaware State on Saturday night at Echols Hall.
Deloach scored 29 points on 11-of-16 shooting, including 5-of-7 from 3-point range. Lyons added 19 points and was 4-of-6 from behind the arc as NSU (4-11, 2-2) won for the third time in four games.
Marcus Neal led the Hornets (3-15, 1-2) with 18 points and Tramaine Johnson added 11.
The Spartans shot 56 percent from the floor and never trailed. NSU led 16-4 after the game's first five minutes as Lyons hit two of his four 3-pointers in the early going. Guard Neal did his best to keep the Hornets close, scoring 12 first-half points. But the Hornets shot just 37 percent and trailed by nine at the half, 33-24.
Neal scored the first four points after the half to bring DSU within 33-28 with 17:53 remaining. But as hot as Lyons was in the first half, Deloach was even hotter in the second. He scored 23 of his 29 points after the intermission, connecting on 8-of-11 from the floor and 5-of-6 from 3-point range.
Deloach scored eight points in a 12-0 run that put the Spartans ahead 49-29 with 13:47 left. His career-high fifth and final trey of the game gave the Spartans their largest lead of the night at 24, 66-42, with 6:15 to go.
NSU shot a season-best 60 percent (9-of-15) from long range.
But the Spartans' defense had as much to do with the victory as the hot hands of Deloach and Lyons. The Hornets shot just 40 percent from the floor and 27 percent (3-of-11) from behind the arc. The Spartans forced 19 DSU turnovers and converted them into 31 points.
NSU tallied a season-high 15 steals, with a career-high seven coming from point guard Aleek Pauline (Jamaica, N.Y.). Deloach and Brandon Monroe (Raeford, N.C.) added three each. Pauline also handed out a career-high eight assists, with Deloach tallying five. Monroe led the Spartans in rebounds (six) and blocks (four), the latter tying the forward's personal-best.
NSU returns to action Monday when it hosts Maryland Eastern Shore beginning at 8 p.m.
