SAVANNAH, Ga. - Junior right hander
Quinn Bright (Virginia Beach, Va.) fanned a career-high 10 batters in pitching all seven innings, and every Spartan starter had at least one hit as Norfolk State downed North Carolina Central 14-1 on Saturday afternoon in the HBCU Baseball Classic at Savannah State's Tiger Field.
The game was called after seven innings due to the run rule.
Bright allowed one run on three hits.
Brandon Hairston (North Garden, Fla.) and
Anselmo Cantu (Virginia Beach, Va.) had three hits each,
John Lynch (Newport News, Va.),
Jerrod Farley (Chester, Va.) and
Juan Herrera (Santiago, Dominican Republic) had two apiece, and Herrera drove in a career-high five runs.
Chris Joyce (Chesapeake, Va.) knocked in three.
The Eagles (0-2) got on the board in the bottom of the first. Akeem Hood led off with a single, stole second and third, and scored on a two-out wild pitch by Bright.
But it was all Spartans after that. Joyce gave NSU a 2-1 lead with a two-run double in the top of the third. The Spartans made it 3-1 with Hairston scored on a NCCU error in the fourth.
NSU then exploded for 11 runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings.
Andrew Suttmiller (Chesapeake, Va.) started the rally in the fifth with an RBI triple, scoring Lynch. Farley added a run-scoring double in the frame. Lynch and Herrera added RBI singles as NSU picked up two more runs in the sixth.
The Spartans then tallied six runs in the seventh inning. Herrera had a three-run base hit, Hairston stroked an RBI single, JOyce walked with the bases loaded and
TiQuan Griffin (Florence, S.C.) hit a sac fly,
NSU plays host Savannah State in a doubleheader starting at noon on Sunday.
