White, Hawks Snap NSU’s 5-Game Win Streak

Box Score

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – Kevin White scored a game-high 22 points, and host Maryland Eastern Shore shot 54.5 percent and held off a late Norfolk State rally to claim an 88-84 victory on Saturday at the Hytche Center.

Tyler Hines had 17 points and 16 rebounds, Hillary Haley added 16 points and Lyvann Obame Obame 15 for the Hawks (5-17, 2-7 MEAC), who snapped their five-game losing streak and broke the five-game winning streak of the Spartans (7-14, 5-4).

Despite not tallying a single point or rebound in the first half, Kyle O'Quinn finished with 19 points and 12 rebounds for his 10th double-double of the year to lead NSU. Aleek Pauline added 16 points, seven assists and seven rebounds without committing a turnover.

UMES hit its first five shots and 10 of its first 14 en route to a 20-8 lead at the second media timeout of the first half. With O'Quinn limited by two early fouls, the Spartans turned to their bench to get back into the game. Marcos Tamares scored all 15 of his points and Brandon Goode all seven of his in the first half. Tamares' outburst included a trio of 3-pointers.

Pauline completed the first-half rally with a pair of free throws that gave the Spartans a 36-35 lead with 49 seconds left in the half. But the Hawks' Mark Robertson hit a trey at the other end to send UMES into the half with a 38-36 edge.

The Spartans trailed just 59-57 after a Pauline free throw with 10:09 remaining in the game, but the Hawks went on a 13-3 run to take control. Haley had five points in the spurt, which ended with the Spartans trailing 72-60 with 5:40 left.

NSU went six minutes – from the 10:23 mark to the 4:23 mark - without a field goal. Still, the Spartans crawled back in it with a frantic last-gasp push. O'Quinn hit a 3-pointer with 19 seconds left to trim the UMES lead to 85-82. But Dishawn Bradshaw hit two free throws at the other end.

Pauline cut the lead to three once more, at 87-84, with four seconds left. But Haley hit 1-of-2 free throws to seal it.

UMES hit 30-of-55 from the field for a 54.5-percent clip. That marks the highest by an NSU opponent since Fairfield hit 63 percent (36-of-57) on Nov. 26. The Spartans shot 45 percent (30-of-67).

O'Quinn blocked two shots for the Spartans, giving him 64 blocks on the season. That breaks the single-season school record of 63 set by Steve Gilbert in the 1992-93 season.

The Spartans look to get back on track on Monday when they face Delaware State at 9 p.m. on ESPNU.
