Spartans Ride Williams and O’Quinn to Best-Ever MEAC Start, Win over Coppin State

Box Score

BALTIMORE, Md.Pendarvis Williams scored a career-high 25 points and Kyle O'Quinn tallied 24 points and 19 rebounds to lead Norfolk State to its seventh straight win, a 74-66 decision at Coppin State on Monday night at the Physical Education Complex.

The Spartans now stand at 14-5 overall and are off to their best-ever start in MEAC play, at 6-0. The seven-game winning streak is NSU's longest since 1994-95, when the Spartans posted a 14-game winning streak during their Division II Final Four season.

Williams drained a career-best six 3-pointers, hitting 6-of-8 from behind the arc. He was 9-of-12 from the floor in all and also grabbed six rebounds and dished out four assists. Not to be outdone, O'Quinn registered his 12th double-double of the year and tied his career-best with 19 rebounds. It was the third time in O'Quinn's career that he has pulled down 19 rebounds in a game, and all three have come against the Eagles (8-10, 3-2).

Neither team led by more than four points in the game's first 16 minutes, but Williams outscored CSU 8-2 over the final four minutes of the half by himself to send the Spartans into the intermission with a 34-26 edge. Williams scored 15 points and hit four treys in the opening half, and O'Quinn had a double-double by the break with 10 points and 13 rebounds. The Eagles, meanwhile, shot just 34 percent from the floor in the first stanza.

Up 39-32 early in the second, NSU all but put the game out of reach with a 9-0 run. O'Quinn had five points in the spurt on a three-point play and a dunk off an assist from Williams, and Rob Johnson hit two jumpers in the run. The Spartans' lead swelled to as many as 22 points on two occasions in the final 10 minutes of the game, allowing NSU to substitute liberally.

O'Quinn finished 11-of-15 from the floor and grabbed seven offensive rebounds. He also had two assists and two blocks. Marcos Tamares and Johnson added seven points and six, respectively, while Jamel Fuentes handed out six assists for the second straight game, matching his career high. NSU posted a season-high 21 assists as a team.

Logan Wiens led the Eagles with 20 points. Antonio Williams chipped in with 14 points and 11 boards, and Michael Harper added 11 points.

The Spartans cap their three-game MEAC road swing with a 6 p.m. matchup at rival Hampton on Saturday.
