Masai, Spartans Finish Third at Christopher Newport Invitational

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Junior Fiona Masai finished third overall to help the Norfolk State women's cross country team place third at the Christopher Newport Invitational on Saturday morning.

The Spartans had three runners finish in the top ten in the 6K race as Masai finished with a season-best time of 23:02.60. Freshman Adugna Desalegn (23:18.30) placed fifth and sophomore Faith Summey (23:52.40) finished 10th.

Rounding out the race for NSU was sophomore Rachel Webb (23:56.50), junior Kassandra Irizarry (25:53.30) and sophomore Ra'Shaun Combs (27:05.90). They placed 11th, 23rd and 30th, respectively.

As a team the Spartans finished with 52 points. William & Mary and Mount St. Mary's tied for first place with 49 points. Virginia Commonwealth placed fourth with 78 points and fellow MEAC opponent North Carolina A&T placed fifth with 125 points.

NSU will travel to Princess Anne, Md., on Oct. 26 to compete at the MEAC Championship.
