NORFOLK, Va.
– Sophomore Liza Gordeeva won the singles bracket title and teamed up with junior Andrea Macchiavello for the doubles title during the three-day Hampton Roads Invitational from Friday through Sunday at the Everett Tennis Center at Virginia Wesleyan.

Gordeeva competed in the upper of the two singles brackets, triumphing in the title match of that top-flight bracket. She earned a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Chowan's Polina Novachuk, a victory that had followed three others between Saturday and Sunday.

Gordeeva started things off with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Maya Donkor, and then continued with a straight-set, 6-1, 6-1 victory over Chowan's Natalya Kamenshchikova. Gordeeva topped teammate and senior Yvonne Kamegne, 6-2, 6-3, in the semifinals, before her finals win.

Kamegne downed Akua Donkor, 6-1, 6-2, and Danika Kahatapitiya, also unattached, by a 7-5, 6-2 score before suffering a defeat at the hands of Gordeeva.

Also competing in the top bracket was Macchiavello. Like Kamegne, Macchiavello won her first two matches of the tournament over a pair of unattached players. She defeated Claire Bedi, 6-1, 6-0, as well as Shelby Prince, 6-1, 6-2. Novachuk downed Macchiavello in the semifinals, 7-6, 6-1.

Seniors Mafalda Lhorca and Krystal Scott took part in the second-flight bracket as well. Scott earned a pair of wins before falling in the final. She downed Chowan's Jennifer Humphrey, 6-1, 6-1, and Mia Proctor of Virginia Wesleyan, 6-0, 6-1. Viktoria Smolchenkova of Chowan earned a 7-6, 6-0 victory over Scott in the bracket final.

Lhorca, meanwhile, won 6-0, 6-2 over Lisa Nguyen of Virginia Wesleyan to start her day. She won the first set in the semifinals, 7-6, before Smolchenkova took the second set, 6-4, and the third-set tiebreaker. Lhorca also faced Kahatapitiya in a consolation match but fell by a 6-2, 6-4 score.

The Spartans competed in doubles on Friday, with Gordeeva and Macchiavello earning the bracket title. The duo had little trouble in its three wins, starting off with an 8-1 triumph over Novachuk and Nati Andrade of Chowan. They downed the unattached tandem of Annika Teske and Ally McNulty, 8-0, and finished off the day with an 8-2 win over Smolchenkova and Kamenshchikova of Chowan in the title match.

Kamegne and Lhorca posted an 8-3 win over Maya Donkor and Akua Donkor at the bottom half of the bracket before falling short against Smolchenkova and Kamenshchikova, 8-5.

Scott teamed up with Virginia Wesleyan's Proctor, and they too dropped a contest to Smolchenkova and Kamenshchikova, 8-6. They rebounded to defeat Donkor and Donkor, 8-2, as well as Andrade and Novachuk, 8-3.

The women will be back in action next Monday for the one-day Longwood Invitational.
