Kiara Howell notched a personal-best en route to a third-place finish in the weight throw for the NSU women's track and field team at the MEAC Indoor Championships at the Prince George's Sports & Learning Complex on Friday.
The Spartans are in ninth place with one day left in the meet, with a total of 14 points. Bethune-Cookman leads with 47.5 points.
Howell's best throw was 52 feet, 11 inches, easily her season best and almost one foot further than her PR. Hampton's Taniya Mitchell won the event (56-6.5) and B-CU's Desire Richardson was second (53-10.5).
Also Friday, the Spartans' distance medley relay team of
Fawzia Kheir,
Kaydianne McKenzie,
Courtney Kearse and
Rachel Webb placed sixth, earning the Spartans three points toward their team total. The quartet recorded a time of 12 minutes, 52.65 seconds.
In preliminary heats, junior
Jazmine Vaughan was the third-fastest qualifier for Saturday's final in the 60 meter hurdles (8.78 seconds) and senior
Brittney McCants qualified for Saturday's final in the 60 meter dash in a time of 7.63 seconds.
The final day of competition gets underway at 9:30 a.m. Saturday.
