After Long Layoff, Spartans Drop 2 to IPFW in Georgia

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 EMERSON, Ga. – Shane Trevino hit the go-ahead two-run home run to lead Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne over Norfolk State in game 1, and IPFW erupted for eight runs in the eighth inning to break a tie in the nightcap en route to an 8-4, 10-3 doubleheader sweep of the Spartans on Sunday at the Lake Point South Complex.

The Spartans, who were playing their first games in 15 days, fell to 2-3 with the two defeats, while IPFW improved to 7-2.

NSU got solid starting outings from Matt Outman in game 1 and Devin Hemmerich in game 2, but the Spartans couldn't keep the powerful Mastodons at bay.

In the opener, Trevino capped a five-run sixth with a go-ahead two-run home run to help IPFW rally past NSU. Trevino finished the game 3-for-6 with four RBI, including a two-run insurance double in the top of the ninth.

The Spartans controlled the first five innings. Jon Timmermen got IPFW on the board first with an RBI single in the top of the second, but NSU took the lead with a three-run bottom of the third. After setting down the first seven NSU hitters of the game, IPFW starter Ryan Wells walked NSU catcher Ismael Herrera. Andre' Moore followed with a triple to center field, tying the game. A two-out IPFW allowed Moore to score the go-ahead run, and first baseman Ryan Kilmon capped the rally with an RBI single to plate Roger Hall.

The Spartans increased their lead to 4-1 on an RBI groundout by pinch hitter Kyle Vaas in the bottom of the fourth.

Outman didn't have his best stuff, but allowed just one run and five hits over five innings for the Spartans. He walked three, hit two and struck out seven, giving him 17 punchouts in 11 innings of work this season.

But IPFW got to the NSU bullpen in the sixth after Outman departed. Two one-out walks from Josh Vales got the rally started, and Brandon Soat's RBI single made it 4-2. Kendall Whitman followed with a single to score Evan VanSumeren, and Soat also scored on the play as a result of an NSU error, tying the game at 4-all. Trevino then followed with a two-run shot to left field, putting the Mastodons in the lead to stay.

Trevino added a two-out, two-run double to double the lead in the ninth.

Herrera and Moore both went 2-for-3 in the opener for NSU, but the Spartans were outhit, 12-5.

The nightcap began as a pitcher's duel between Hemmerich and IPFW's Zac Mishler. Neither allowed a run in the first five innings, and both pitched around a bases-loaded jam to keep the game scoreless heading into the sixth.

But in the top of the sixth, Hemmerich hit Kendall Whitman to lead off the inning. One batter later, Shannon Baker lifted a two-run home run to left to break the deadlock.

NSU tied it in the bottom of the sixth. Mikey Bruno led off with a single and pinch hitter Robbie Depp was hit by a pitch. Bruno and pinch runner Noah Johnson both scored on a two-out single by Roger Hall that tied the game.

Neither team scored in the seventh, sending the game into extra innings. The Spartans' pitching staff scuffled in the eighth inning. Four different Spartans toed the rubber in the eighth and they combined to walk eight batters. An NSU error and RBI hits by Whitman (RBI single) and Trevino (two-run double) blew the game open. IPFW scored eight times in the inning but had just two hits.

The Spartans added a run in the bottom of the eighth thanks to an IPFW error.

Hemmerich earned a no-decision in game 2 despite allowing just four hits and two runs with seven strikeouts in seven innings. Robbie Hiser (0-1) took the loss after moving from third base to the mound. He pitched a scoreless seventh, but walked two runners and had a pair of runs charged to him (one earned) in the eighth.

Trevino and Baker each had two RBI in the nightcap for IPFW, giving Trevino six for the day. Moore was 1-for-5 with a double in game 2, giving him three hits to lead NSU in the two games. Hall had his first two RBI of the season.

The teams are slated to play another doubleheader starting at 11 a.m. Monday.
