FLORENCE, S.C. – Florida A&M won three matches via tiebreaker, and those victories made the difference in a 6-1 triumph over the Norfolk State men's tennis team on Sunday during the MEAC Southern Division Round-Up at the Florence Tennis Center.

The Rattlers won at No. 2 and 3 singles and No. 2 doubles in tiebreakers during the late morning matchup. The two squads split the other doubles matches, and FAMU narrowly won despite the final score differential.

Senior
Igor Braga won the first set, 6-3, over Carols Waitman at the second singles slot. Waitman responded with a 6-4 win in the second set and a tight 10-8 victory in the third set tiebreaker. Freshman
Antonio Pejic, meanwhile, faced Walner Espinoza at the third spot. Espinoza won the first set, 6-4, before Pejic took the second, 7-6. Espinoza was able to come away with the win after taking the third set tiebreaker, 10-7.

Senior
Daniel Grauel gave NSU (2-10, 0-2 MEAC) its only point of the match when he defeated Jalen Evans at the No. 5 position, 6-0 and 6-2.

Waitman and Karlyn Small won at No. 2 doubles to give the Rattlers (1-7, 1-1 MEAC) the doubles point. The duo defeated Pejic and senior
Pascal Domnik, 8-7, including 7-4 in the tiebreaker.

Braga and Grauel knocked off Evans and Joel Ovonlen-Jones, 8-5, at the third doubles spot. At the top slot, though, Espinoza and Courage Okungbowa downed senior
Shaheed Mourillon-Swift and freshman
Fatehdeep Singh, 8-1, for the other FAMU doubles win.

In singles play, Small earned a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Domnik at the No. 1 position. In the other two matches, Okungbowa downed Singh, 6-0 and 6-0, at the No. 4 slot, while Ovonlen-Jones pulled out a 6-1, 6-0 win at the sixth position.

The Spartans will face Bethune-Cookman on Monday at 10 a.m. during the second day of the round-up.
