NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk State women's tennis team won the lineup's top three singles matches, but Albany won the bottom three and the doubles point in defeating the short-handed Spartans, 4-3, on Thursday morning at the Everett Tennis Center.

NSU (4-8) had to default at No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles due to a short-handed lineup. Albany (5-6) did the rest in doubles and also won at the fourth and fifth singles slots for the match win.

Playing without freshman
Dajana Cvjetkovic, the Spartans were still able to come away with victories at the top three singles spots. Sophomore
Liza Gordeeva defeated Dajana Ognjenovic at the No. 1 spot, 6-1 and 6-4, while junior
Andrea Macchiavello downed Mireille Hermans at the second position, 6-3 and 6-4.

Senior
Yvonne Kamegne came away with a tight win as well at the third slot, defeating Cheryl Kukkonen by a 6-4 score in the first set before taking the second, 7-6, including 7-3 in the tiebreaker.

The Great Danes were able to pull out wins at No. 4 and No. 5 singles for the overall match victory. Alba Sala handed senior
Krystal Scott a 6-0, 6-1 loss at the fourth spot, while Ana Glumac knocked off senior
Mafalda Lhorca, 6-4 and 6-1, at the fifth slot in the lineup.

Albany got to that position after winning both contested doubles matches. Scott and Chassidy King earned a 6-4 victory over Macchiavello and Lhorca at the No. 1 position, while Kukkonen and Sala came away with a 6-3 win over Gordeeva and Scott at the second spot.

"I am very pleased with how the girls handled themselves today," said head coach
Worth Richardson. "Down a player and facing a strong Albany team, the ladies played some tremendous singles matches. With each match, we are getting more confident playing outdoors, which should serve us well down the road."

The match was played at Virginia Wesleyan's Everett Tennis Center due to ongoing construction of the NSU Tennis Complex.

The Spartans will next play at Longwood on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
