Box Score 2 BALTIMORE, Md. – Senior
Liz Riley gave up just one hit in seven innings for the Norfolk State softball team in the nightcap of a doubleheader sweep of Coppin State on Thursday afternoon at the CSU Softball Complex.
Riley allowed just a one-out, fifth inning single to the Eagles while also striking out seven batters in seven innings of work in a 7-0 victory. The Spartans built a six-run lead in the first contest before holding on for a 7-5 win.
Junior third baseman
Whitney Williams provided plenty of offense, finishing the day 5-for-9 with four runs and four RBI. Junior
Megan Dunning drove in a pair of runs in the first game, while senior right fielder
Alina Moriarty knocked in a pair in game 2. Moriarty finished the doubleheader 5-for-7 with four runs and two RBI.
NSU improved to 11-22 overall and 10-4 in the MEAC. The Spartans entered the day tied for first in the MEAC Northern Division with Delaware State.
Riley (3-10) pitched NSU's first shutout of the season and the first for the Spartans in almost exactly two years. Danielle Smith hit a single up the middle in the fifth to spoil the no-hit bid. Riley also walked five batters, including the first three of the game. But the Eagles left five runners on base over the first two innings, and Smith was the only CSU batter to reach base throughout the next five frames.
Williams doubled and later scored on a fielder's choice in the second, and the Spartans added three more runs in each of the next two innings. In the third, Moriarty hit a two-out RBI double to score her freshman sister
Seana Moriarty. The elder Moriarty then scored on Williams' two-run homer to right field.
Dunning doubled to start the fourth inning and scored two outs later on
Seana Moriarty's RBI single. Moriarty scored after two straight errors on CSU, and then
Alina Moriarty hit a run-scoring single to close out the day's scoring.
Freshman
Megan Przeslawski entered the first game in relief and struck out nine in 3.2 innings of work while allowing one hit and two earned runs. The Spartans built a 6-0 lead before Coppin State (3-26, 3-8 MEAC) rallied.
Williams hit an RBI single in the first, and sophomore first baseman
Kayla McNair followed with an RBI hit for a 2-0 Spartan lead. In the third inning,
Alina Moriarty scored from first when Williams singled and the ball got away from the right fielder. The Spartans eventually loaded the bases, and Williams scored on a fielder's choice. CSU starter Ellie Vogel got out of the inning without any more damage, though.
Then in the fourth,
Alina Moriarty walked and Williams singled, and then both came home on Dunning's two-out double for a 6-0 lead.
Samantha Delinger hit a two-run single in a three-run fourth as CSU cut the deficit in half. After NSU extended its lead to 7-3 in the sixth on senior catcher
Sommer Di Fulgo's RBI double, the Eagles scored two more runs in the seventh on Smith's two-run homer.
The Spartans finished the day with 19 hits but left 12 runners on base in the first contest and nine in the second. CSU had five hits total between the two games.
The two teams will play the last game of the series tomorrow at noon.
