CNU Holiday Open Results
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Sophomore
Janay Fields was runner-up in both the 60 and 200-meter dashes as the Norfolk State women's track and field team opened indoor season with nine top-five finishes at the Christopher Newport University Holiday Open on Sunday.
Fields clocked times of 7.72 seconds in the 60m and 26.07 in the 200m on Sunday to highlight the efforts of the Spartan sprinters. She had the highest finish in any individual event for the Spartans on Sunday, but it was the 4x400 meter relay team that brought home the Spartans' only event victory in the meet. The quartet of sophomores
Chazmin Fullwood and
Crystal Green and seniors
Nickheila John and
Daphne Cobbs recorded an easy win with a time of 4:05.14, more than six seconds faster than runner-up Virginia State.
NSU's other top finishes on the track included Fullwood (1:38.31) and John (1:41.73) placing second and third, respectively, in the 600 meters;
Candice Higgins' fourth-place finish in the 3,000 meters (10:41.13); and freshman T'Nai Wells placing fifth in the 60-meter hurdles. Wells ran a time of 9.02 seconds in the prelims and 9.18 in the finals.
Junior
Brianna Hayes had the highest finish for the Spartans in field events. She cleared 5 feet, 5 inches in the high jump, bettered only by Coppin State's Khemani Roberts (5-7). Hayes was one of three athletes to clear 5-5, but ended up in fourth place based on number of misses.
The Spartans will take a month off for exams and the holiday break before returning to action at George Mason's Father Diamond Invitational on Jan. 7.
