WILMINGTON, N.C. – The Norfolk State men's tennis team succumbed to UNC Wilmington on Saturday afternoon, as the Seahawks defeated the Spartans 6-0 in a matchup at the UNCW Courts.
Â
The Seahawks secured points in five of the six singles matches as well as two of the three doubles contests to secure the sweep. Playing with a short-handed lineup, the Spartans had to forfeit matches at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles.
Â
UNC Wilmington (3-3) thus had to win just one of the top two doubles matchups. They did so at the No. 1 slot, where Xander Veys and Javier Restrepo defeated sophomore
Fatehdeep Singh and freshman
Flavian Fernandez by a 6-0 score.
Â
Sophomore
Antonio Pejic and freshman
Benedikt Henning were trailing 4-1 in the matchup at No. 2 doubles to Aviv Ben Shabat and Christiaan Van der Burgh before the contest was called.
Â
"UNCW is a very smart, tough team, and they have established themselves as one of the top mid-major programs in the country," said NSU head coach
Worth Richardson. "I was very proud of how the guys competed in singles against the Seahawks. We learned a lot and will look to build on this performance as we head to Liberty next weekend."
Â
Henning had the strongest day in singles for NSU (0-2), winning the first set over Agustin Savarino by a 7-5 score in their match at the No. 2 spot. Savarino turned around and won the second set by the same 7-5 score and was up 3-0 in the third set before the match was called.
Â
UNC Wilmington won by sweeps in the other four contested matchups. That included the No. 5 slot, where Andres Torres had to claw to a 6-4, 7-5 win over Singh. At the top spot in the lineup, Van der Burgh defeated Fernandez, 6-2 and 6-1.
Â
Restrepo earned a 6-2, 6-3 win over Pejic at the No. 3 slot, while NSU freshman
Dan Dumitrascu fell by a 6-2, 6-2 score at the No. 4 position to Ben Shabat.

The Spartans will compete next Saturday at 6 p.m. at Liberty.
