5th Inning Carries William & Mary Past NSU, 10-6

Box Score WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Host William & Mary scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to help the Tribe overcome Norfolk State 10-6 on Tuesday evening at Plumeri Park.

Cullen Large drove in four runs for the Tribe (7-10), including a two-run home run in the third and the go-ahead RBI single in the fifth inning.

Roger Hall and Ismael Herrera had two hits each, and Alex Mauricio and Justin Lee had two RBI apiece for the Spartans (6-10).

NSU put together a pair of three-run innings to take the lead on two separate occasions. In the second, Hall led off with a double before Kyle Vaas singled. Mauricio followed with a sacrifice fly for the game's first run. After an Ismael Herrera single, Lee hit a two-out, two-run double to increase the Spartans' lead to 3-0.

Kyle Wrighte's two-out, two-run single in the second got W&M on the board, and Large hit a two-out, two-run homer in the third to give the Tribe its first lead.

NSU, however, tacked on three more runs in the top of the fifth. Walks to Vaas and Denathan Dukes and an error on Syeed Mahdi's sacrifice bunt allowed NSU to load the bases. Mauricio hit a two-out RBI single, and a Tribe error on the play allowed two more runners to score as the Spartans took a 6-4 advantage.

But W&M responded with four runs in the fifth to retake the lead for good. After two walks to start the inning, Ryan Hall (single), Charley Gould (double) and Large had consecutive RBI hits to account for the first three runs of the frame. Hunter Smith drew a bases-loaded walk later in the inning to extend the Tribe's edge to 8-6.

W&M added single runs in the sixth and eighth innings to add breathing room. The Tribe bullpen, meanwhile, held NSU scoreless after the fifth. The trio of Charlie Fletcher (1.1), Robert White (2.0) and Joseph Gaouette (1.0) combined for 4.1 scoreless innings pitched, with Fletcher earning the victory.

Michael Parmentier (0-3) allowed four runs on three hits and three walks in one-third of an inning to take the loss in relief. Starter Chase Anderson went four innings, gave up four runs and struck out three in a no-decision.

Gould and Large had three hits each for W&M, which out-hit the Spartans 12-8. Hall and Ryder Miconi added two hits each.

Vaas scored two runs for NSU. Hall, Lee and Brian Beard all hit doubles in the loss.

The Spartans play their first conference series of the year this weekend when they host Delaware State for a three-game series at Marty L. Miller Field. The teams play a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Saturday and a single game at noon Sunday.
