Spartans Match School Division I Wins Record in 9-3 Victory over CSU

Box Score DUNDALK, Md. – The Norfolk State baseball team matched last year's team for the most overall and MEAC wins in the school's Division I era, completing a three-game sweep of Coppin State with a 9-3 victory on Monday afternoon at the Community College of Baltimore County-Dundalk.

The Spartans (27-18 overall, 19-5 MEAC North) outhit Coppin State (11-36, 8-15) 12-3. Four different Spartans had two hits each. Denathan Dukes and Justin Lee had two hits and two RBI apiece. Brian Beard went 2-for-4 and scored three runs, while Chase Anderson was 2-for-4 with two runs.

Devin Hemmerich (4-4) struck out seven batters and allowed just three hits over seven innings pitched to pick up the victory on the mound. Cooper Jones and Matt Boone each tossed a scoreless inning of relief with two strikeouts apiece to close out the Eagles.

NSU struck for four runs in the second inning to take control. An error by CSU followed by infield singles by Chris Ford and Anderson loaded the bases with two outs. Lee opened the scoring with a two-run single, and Dukes followed with a two-run double to give NSU a 4-0 lead.

Kyle Vaas' RBI single in the third made it 5-0, and Anderson doubled and scored on a wild pitch in the fourth to increase the NSU advantage to 6-0.

John O'Dwyer hit a two-run triple with two outs to get the Eagles on the board in the bottom of the fourth.

The Spartans got a run back in the fifth. Beard walked, stole second and took third on an overthrow before scoring on Roger Hall's long sacrifice fly to the wall in left.

NSU capped its scoring in the ninth. Beard led off with a double to right-center and scored when Hall doubled over the CSU center fielder's head. Pinch hitter Tony Leite got in on the act with a double that one-hopped the wall in left, scoring Hall for the final run of the game.

Hall added two RBI and Beard stole two bases for the Spartans.

NSU concludes its regular-season schedule with a noon game at Duke on Wednesday.
