CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – A rare near-double from freshman
Felix Kiprotich and a shot put victory for
Chris Lee highlighted the NSU men's track and field team's showing at the Art & Linda Maillet UNC Open on Saturday.

Kiprotich won the 5,000 meters Saturday and was second – and the top collegiate finisher – in the 800 meters in the one-day meet. Kiprotich clocked a time of 15:21.42 in the 5,000 meters and ran a 1:57.55 in the 800. Only former Olympian Bershawn Jackson ran a faster time than Kiprotich in the 800. Lee, meanwhile, won the shot put with a top throw of 53 feet, 3 inches, capping a productive day for the NSU field athletes.

NSU had three of the top six finishers in the high jump. Freshman
Garth Warner captured third place with a best height of 6-6.75. Fellow freshman
Jacob Milton took fourth in 6-4.75, and
Joseph Boyd was sixth (6-2.75). In the long jump,
Michael-Thomas Brown recorded a mark of 22-6.5, which placed him third.

Brown was also strong on the track, clocking identical times of 6.92 seconds in both the prelims and finals of the 60 meters. He was a close second, just .01 behind Virginia Union's Justin Hunter, in the finals.

In other sprints, freshman
Jaylen Banks and senior
Rashad Ramsey finished second and third, respectively, in the 400 meters. Banks ran a 49.65 and Ramsey posted a time of 49.93.

NSU also dominated in the 5,000 meters. Kiprotich led a first-through-fourth Spartan sweep in the event, with
Ronald Korir finishing second (15:23.03),
Anteneh Girma third (15:38.32) and
Festus Bett fourth (15:56.82).
Haileyesus Demsie capped a strong day in the distance events for NSU with a fourth-place finish in 8:48.65.

The Spartans concluded the meet with a third-place showing in the 4x400 relay. Ramsey, Banks,
Allan Frye and
Justin Pinder clocked a time of 3:24.86.

NSU is back in action next weekend at Liberty University.
