MEAC Indoor Track - Day 2 Results
LANDOVER, Md. – Thanks to a big day from its field athletes, the Norfolk State men's track and field team holds the overall lead after the second day of competition at the 2017 MEAC Indoor Track & Field Championships.
Â
The Spartans have 44 points after seven events. North Carolina A&T is second with 39.5 points.
Â
The biggest performance of the day for the Spartans was turned in by freshman
Jacob Milton. The rookie high jumper had a personal record of 6 feet, 8 inches and a season-best clearance of 6-6.75 coming into the day, but Milton soared to new heights Friday. He cleared 6-11.5 to win the gold medal in the event and didn't miss on any attempts up through his winning height. Fellow freshman
Garth Warner, who was the top-ranked high jumper in the MEAC coming into the meet, cleared 6-8 to take fourth place and give NSU 15 points in the event.
Â
Milton wasn't the only Spartan to notch a PR on Friday. Junior
Da'Trail Hockaday smashed his previous personal-best to finish as runner-up in the weight throw. Hockaday's final throw traveled 54 feet 4.5 inches, some two and a half feet further than his previous PR from last year's MEAC Indoor Championships.
Â
NSU's other points on Friday came via a third-place finish in the distance medley relay. The team of
Desmond Fogg,
Justin Pinder,
Rashad Ramsey and
Felix Kiprotich clocked a time of 10 minutes, 22.65 seconds to place behind first-place Maryland Eastern Shore and runner-up Hampton.
Â
Also Friday,
Michael-Thomas Brown and
Allan Frye advanced through the preliminary rounds in their respective events. Brown clocked a time of 6.89 seconds in the 60-meter dash and Frye ran a season-best time of 8.10 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles to advance to Saturday's event finals.

In first-day action Thursday, Spartan men took second, fifth and sixth places in the 5,000 meters. Junior
Ronald Korir was runner-up in 15:02.30. Kiprotich took fifth in 15:18.35 and
