PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – Host Maryland Eastern Shore recorded a pair of wins in its final at-bat on Sunday, taking both ends of a doubleheader from Norfolk State by scores of 6-5 and 3-2 at Hawk Stadium.
The Spartans, who wrapped up the MEAC North title with their series-opening win on Saturday, fell to 24-19, 16-7 MEAC. The Hawks, who secured the third and final berth in the MEAC Tournament later this month, improved to 12-36, 9-15.
In game 1, Norfolk State scored three runs in the top of the ninth to take the lead, but the Hawks scored a pair in the bottom of the ninth and won on Justin Somerville's one-out RBI single. In game 2, a bases-loaded wild pitch was the difference in the Hawk' 3-2 win.
In the opener, both teams scored a run in the first, but the Hawks benefitted from four defensive miscues from NSU in the middle innings to score three more runs. In the fifth, a throwing error by the Spartans allowed one run to score. NSU then successfully picked off a MDES runner on first, but Isaiah Chambers scored during the run-down.
The Spartans got a run back thanks to a throwing error on the Hawks that allowed
Alex Mauricio to score in the top of the sixth. But Somerville reached on an error and scored on a single by MDES' Dominic DeBlaisie to put the Hawks ahead 4-2 in the bottom of the frame.
But the Spartans came to life in the ninth.
Justin Burrell's single off the shortstop's glove got things started.
Stephen Baughan followed with a single.
Dion Jordan, who pinch ran for Baughan, then teamed with Burrell to execute a double steal of second and home to bring NSU within 4-3.
Johnny Mayer tied the game with a squeeze bunt before
Tony Leite's RBI double down the right-field line put the Spartans in front, 5-4.
Then it was the Hawks' turn. Chambers drew a lead-off walk from NSU reliever
Quenten Thomas. After a sacrifice bunt and a single by Jordan Martin off new pitcher
Tyler Morgan, Ryan Rotondo tied the game with an RBI single. NSU intentionally walked Jamison Trower to load the bases, but Somerville's single ended it.
Mauricio went 2-for-3 for the Spartans. Rotondo had three hits, and Somerville and Joey Nicastro two apiece for MDES.
Mauricio and Hawk lefty Zach Mills locked up in a low-scoring pitcher's duel in game 2. The Spartans didn't get a hit until two outs in the fourth, but it came on catcher
Ismael Herrera's RBI double that scored Burrell with the game's first run. But the Hawks answered back with a run in the bottom of the fourth on Joey Nicastro's RBI groundout and took a 2-1 lead on Tyler Friis' RBI single in the fifth.
NSU tied it at 2-all in the sixth as
Roger Hall doubled and scored after a pair of wild pitches.
But the Hawks again had the answer in their final at-bat. Jordan Wesley led off with a single off Spartan reliever
Jonathan Mauricio (3-4). Pinch hitter Randy Pineda then attempted a sacrifice bunt, but was ruled safe on a close play at first, legging out the bunt single. After Chambers struck out attempting to bunt, Friis' infield single loaded the bases with one out. Wesley then scampered home from third on a wild pitch to score the winning run.
Hall and Herrera both went 1-for-3 in game 2 for the Spartans. Friis had three hits and Somerville two for MDES.
Alex Mauricio allowed two runs and five hits over six innings in a no-decision for NSU. His older brother, Jonathan, took the loss after allowing one run in one-third of an inning.
Mills struck out eight in a complete game for the Hawks. He allowed just three hits and two runs.
The Spartans return home for their final two regular-season games, beginning with a 4 p.m. Wednesday matchup with Longwood at
Marty L. Miller Field.
