Barnes Meet Record Among 3 Event Wins for NSU Men at JDL Invite

| By:
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Trequan Barnes set a new JDL Invitational record in winning the 400-meter dash on Saturday.

Barnes, already ranked 14th in the nation in the 400, posted a 47.33 on the flat track at the JDL meet on Saturday, breaking the five-year old meet record by 0.88 seconds.

Spartan field athletes also posted two event victories on Saturday. In his first collegiate track meet, Bobby Price won the long jump with a top leap of 23 feet, 5.5 inches. The All-MEAC safety on the gridiron, jumping for the first time since high school, now ranks No. 4 in the conference in the long jump.

Junior Garth Warner had the Spartans' other win, taking the high jump title with a top clearance of 6-9.5. That is a season best for Warner and puts him third among MEAC high jumpers.

In other field events, Zaire Barnes took 10th place with a top throw of 44-11, which ranks as the sophomore's top toss of the season.

Elsewhere on the track, Meshack Kipchirchir placed 10th in the mile with the third-best time in the MEAC this season. His time of 4 minutes, 20 seconds was converted to a banked-track time of 4:16.73.

The Spartans also had three runners qualify for the finals of the 60-meter hurdles. Jaylen Banks (8.44), Da'Jion Hilliard (8.50) and Byron Carson (8.71) placed fifth through seventh in the event.

NSU capped the meet by placing third in its heat in the distance medley relay. The quartet of Kamil Jihad, Justin Pinder, Lelei Too and Evans Cheruiyot registered a time of 10:30.50 (10:22.06 converted), tops in the MEAC this season.

The Spartans will compete at the 2019 MEAC Indoor Championships this Thursday through Saturday at the Prince George's Sports & Learning Complex in Landover, Maryland.
