Post-Game Interview with Adam Collins
NORFOLK, Va. – Adam Collins' two-run single ignited a five-run sixth-inning rally that carried Norfolk State to a 7-3 win Sunday and series victory over Wagner at
Marty L. Miller Field.
Wagner (1-2) scored twice in the fifth to take its first lead, 3-2. But the Spartans (2-1) batted around in the sixth to retake control.
Stephen Baughan,
Mason Velasquez and
Danny Hosley walked to load the bases with no outs. One out later, Collins sent a 1-2 pitch into right-center to score Baughan and Velasquez, who avoided the tag with a nifty slide and dive to give the Spartans the lead.
Ty Hanchey followed with a two-run single of his own and
Alsander Womack also added an RBI single later in the inning to put the Spartans ahead 7-2.
NSU's bullpen shut the door from there. Freshman
Josue Cumba (1-0) earned the win in his first collegiate appearance. He pitched 2.2 scoreless innings of relief and allowed just one hit while striking out four.
Kevin Alicea got the last out in the eighth and
Jackson Sanchez pitched a scoreless ninth to finish off the victory.
Womack drove in a run with a grounder and scored on a two-out RBI double by
Caleb Ward as the Spartans took a 2-0 lead in the third. Freddy Sabido hit an RBI single in the fourth for Wagner's first run, while A.J. Medrano and Cody Bey hit run-scoring singles in the fifth to put the Seahawks into the lead.
Hanchey, Hosley and Ward had two hits apiece for the Spartans. Collins, Hanchey and Womack each drove in two runs. Collins also scored a pair of runs.
Justin Walton took a no-decision in his first career start. He pitched five-plus innings, allowed one earned run and struck out five.
The Spartans are on the road Tuesday at VCU at 3 p.m.
