LEHIGH, Pa. – The Norfolk State women's cross country team opened the 2023 season with a strong performance at the Paul Short Invitational on Saturday, led by junior
Mercyline Kimaiyo's 28
th place finish in a field of 351 competitors.
Kimaiyo completed the 6k course in 22 minutes, 29.4 seconds, against a stacked field of the region's top long-distance runners.
Kara Grant was the next Spartan to cross the finish line, placing 152
nd with a time of 23:46.5.
Jahmei Wyatt (24:28.1),
Ludjenie Mondesir (24:41.9), and Leanna Lewis (25:01.3) rounded out NSU's top-five.
The entire NSU team wore pink on Saturday for the school's Breast Cancer Awareness Day, and in support of
Norfolk State Director of Athletics Melody Webb and head volleyball coach Kathy Bullock.
The Spartans return to action next week, competing in the Cedric Walker HBCU XC Challenge on Oct. 6 in Cary, N.C.
