Game 2 Box Score

NORFOLK, Va.Leon Schabacker (Virginia Beach, Va.) pitched a two-hitter for his second shutout of the season in the nightcap after Joey Seal (Newport News, Va.) earned the win with a solid start in game 1 as Norfolk State swept North Carolina Central 14-4, 5-0 on Sunday afternoon at Marty L. Miller Field.

Billy Canady (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Chris Joyce (Chesapeake, Va.) both drove in four runs on the day to lift NSU to 5-4 overall. NCCU dropped to 1-6.

In game 2, Schabacker (2-1) took a perfect game into the fifth and a no-hitter into the sixth. He walked Brian Brice with one out in the top of the fifth to end the perfect game. But Schabacker got the next hitter, Tim McAllister, to hit into a double play to face the minimum 15 batters through five.

In the sixth, NCCU's Tye Gray led off by singling through the left side to end the no-hit bid. He, too, was quickly erased on a double play. The Eagles got two more base runners in the inning, on an infield hit by Edward Pegues and a walk to Oliver Jenkins. But Schabacker got out of it unscathed.

Schabacker allowed just two hits. He walked three, struck out three and hit one in his fourth career shutout.

The Spartans took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on an RBI fielder's choice grounder by Jerrod Farley (Chester, Va.). Chris Joyce (Chesapeake, Va.) made it 2-0 in the third with a two-out RBI single. Three more NSU runs came across in the fourth, two as a result of NCCU errors and another on an RBI single by Canady.

Jeff Citero was the losing pitcher for the Eagles, pitching a complete game and allowing just one earned run.

In game 1, Joyce went 2-for-3 with four RBI and two runs scored, and Canady was 3-for-3 with a double and a career-high three RBI. Boyd added two RBI, while John Lynch (Newport News, Va.), Moriba George (St. Thomas, U.S.V.I.) and Farley scored twice each.

NSU broke the game open with a six-run second inning, which included two-run singles by Joyce and Canady. Brandon Hairston (North Garden, Va.) also hit a two-out RBI single in the frame.

Seal (2-0) got the win, allowing just two hits and one earned run in four innings. He struck out four. Douglas Dalley (0-2) got the loss, allowing nine runs, eight earned, in two innings.

The teams conclude their three-game series with a single game at noon on Monday.
