CARY, N.C. – Brianeisha Eure (Virginia Beach, Va.) went a combined 6-for-7 with two RBI and Micki Rodriguez (Newport News, Va.) pitched a five-inning, four-hit shutout in game 2 as the Norfolk State softball team swept a doubleheader 6-1, 10-0 from North Carolina Central on Wednesday at Thomas Brooks Park.
In the first game, NCCU (3-35) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second on Ashanti Stroud's RBI double that scored Ashley Henderson.
NSU (13-20) did not get on the board until the top of the third inning. Rebecca Barnes' (Hampton, Va.) single scored Rodriguez and Amelia Lewis (Brampton, Ontario) knocked in two runs to give the Spartans a 3-1 lead.
NSU scored three runs in the seventh to seal the 6-1 win. Ky Brown (Woodsfield, Ohio) improved to 3-3 on the season with the win. She allowed three hits, one earned run, and struck out six in four innings. Sarah Wittwer (Grand Junction, Colo.) tossed three no-hit shutout innings and struck out two to earn her first save of the season. Kristen Schooler took the loss for NCCU after pitching seven innings and giving up 13 hits, six earned runs, and retiring six batters.
The Spartans came out focused in game 2 and dominated from beginning to end. They tallied 10 runs and 12 hits, doing the damage in five innings. Schooler fell to 2-19 on the season in the outing, walking three and striking out one. Rodriguez improved to 5-9 with the win.
Ashley Archer (Amelia, Va.) was 3-for-4 with two RBI in game two, while Wittwer went 2-for-3, knocked in two runs and scored twice.
The Spartans will look to extend their seven-game winning streak as they travel to Orangeburg, S.C. to take on South Carolina State in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference three-game series. The teams play a doubleheader at 1 p.m. on Saturday and a single game at noon on Sunday.
