NORFOLK, Va. – In his first meet of outdoor season, senior
Steve Coles had a hand in three top-five finishes on Saturday to highlight the Norfolk State men's track and field team's efforts at the Morgan State Legacy Meet.
Coles was runner-up in the 200 meters, fourth in the 400 meters and helped the Spartan 4x100 relay team finish as runner-up. His time of 21.11 seconds in the 200 is the third-fastest time of the outdoor season among all MEAC runners. He also clocked a 47.41 in the 400m and aided the Spartans' 4x100 relay in running its fastest time of the season, 41.30 seconds.
Romero Hines,
Michael-Thomas Brown and
Xavier Collins teamed with Coles on the 4x100 relay.
In other races, Brown ran a collegiate-best time of 10.81 seconds in the prelims of the 100 meters, but he did not run in the final. Freshman
Justin Pinder also clocked a collegiate best time, placing 11th in the 800 meters in 1 minute, 55.85 seconds.
NSU's depth in the hurdles was on display Saturday, as well. Three Spartans qualified for the finals of the 110m hurdles:
Allan Frye (14.68),
Ryan Turner (14.83) and
Marcus Anderson (15.00). Only Anderson and Turner went on to run in the finals, and both personal-best official times of 14.67. Anderson (14.664) placed third, and Turner (14.666) was fourth.
Frye also doubled up in the 400 meter hurdles, where he finished eighth in a time of 53.68 seconds.
In longer distances,
Desmond Fogg finished 10th in the 1,500 meters (4:06.43) and
Tomas Fantaye came in fifth in the 5,000 (16:21.71). NSU also had three of the five entrants in the 3,000 meter steeplechase, where
Haileyesus Demsie (9:45.88) took the gold medal. Fogg was runner-up (9:55.25) and Fantaye placed fourth (10:04.71).
The Spartans came away with a trio of top-three finishes in the field events.
Da'Trail Hockaday was the runner-up in the discus throw with a top toss of 146 feet, 8 inches.
Johnathan Anderson posted an outdoor PR in the shot put, 47-5, which was good enough for third place.
Willard Ward also recorded a third-place finish, clearing 12-5.5 in the pole vault.
The Spartans will compete this coming week in the Penn Relays in Philadelphia.
