Box Score BALTIMORE, Md. – Host Coppin State scored 11 runs in the first three innings and held off Norfolk State, 11-7, in the series finale between the teams on Sunday at Joe Cannon Stadium.
Colin Dyer and John O'Dwyer had four hits each for CSU (5-20, 3-5 MEAC North), who had 17 hits to avoid a series sweep at the hands of NSU.
Brian Beard and
Tony Leite each went 2-for-3 for the Spartans (11-14, 5-3).
The Spartans struck first with two runs in the top of the first.
Denathan Dukes walked to lead off the game and later came around to score on a passed ball.
Kyle Vaas' RBI single give NSU a 2-0 edge.
But the Eagles scored 11 runs over their first three innings at bat. Jamar Criss hit a run-scoring single and Bryant Miranda knocked in another run with a fielder's choice to tie the game in the bottom of the first.
Criss and Andrew O'Dwyer hit RBI doubles in a five-run second inning for the Eagles, who had six hits in the frame. Miranda capped the inning with a two-run single to make it 7-2.
CSU kept pouring it on in the third. Andrew O'Dwyer hit a two-run triple and Jack Kraft hit a two-run home run to make it 11-2.
NSU held CSU scoreless the rest of the way thanks to a sterling relief effort from sophomore
Michael Parmentier, who relieved starter
Devin Hemmerich in the fourth. Parmentier pitched the final five innings without allowing a run, limiting CSU to three hits while striking out a career-high seven.
The Spartans cut into their deficit in the later stages of the game, getting five runs combined in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings.
Ismael Herrera walked in the sixth and came around to score after CSU committed an error while fielding
Justin Lee's single. In the seventh,
Angel Rosario's bases-loaded walk and a two-out Eagle error that allowed two runs to score brought NSU within 11-6.
Leite's RBI single in the eighth made it an 11-7 game. But CSU pitcher Krystian Negron, who started game one of Saturday's doubleheader, got the final out of the eighth and pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to seal the win for CSU.
Criss added three hits while Kraft and Andrew O'Dwyer had two each for CSU, which snapped its nine-game losing streak in the series with the Spartans.
The Spartans play their annual exhibition game against the Norfolk Tides triple-A team on Tuesday night at 5:45 p.m. at Harbor Park in downtown Norfolk. NSU then plays a three-game series at Delaware State next Saturday and Sunday.
