Spartans Edge Coppin State 7-6 in 12 Innings, Stay Alive in MEAC Tournament

Box Score SALISBURY, Md. – Sophomore catcher Ismael Herrera hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 12th inning to score Roger Hall with the winning run, giving the Spartans a 7-6 win over Coppin State in a MEAC Tournament elimination game at Perdue Stadium in Salisbury, Md.

The victory was the Spartans' 28th of the year, setting a new single-season program Division I record. The win advances NSU (28-20) to an 8 p.m. elimination game later Monday night against Florida A&M.

Hall led off the 12th with a double off CSU reliever Andrew O'Dwyer (1-7). Hall took third on a CSU fielder's choice. Alex Mauricio reached base on that fielder's choice and after a popout, O'Dwyer intentionally walked Chase Anderson to load the bases and set up a force out at home. But Herrera lined a pitch into right, which scored Hall from third easily.

Alex Mauricio (3-1) got the win with 3.1 innings of scoreless relief. He struck out three. Michael Parmentier struck out a career-high nine in 6.1 innings of relief work for the Spartans, but CSU managed to score twice in the top of the ninth off the combination of Parmentier and Mauricio to tie the game at 6-all and send it to extra innings.

The Spartans took a 6-4 lead into the ninth. Parmentier quickly struck out the first two batters of the inning. But CSU third baseman Bryant Miranda singled, then Parmentier walked George Dragon.

Mauricio relieved Parmentier at that point, but Darien Percell greeted Mauricio with a double to right, scoring Miranda. Pinch runner Joshua Smith scored the tying run on a passed ball.

O'Dwyer and Mauricio cruised through the 10th and 11th innings, and Mauricio retired the Eagles in order in the top of the 12th before Hall started the NSU rally in the bottom of the 12th.

The Spartans got off to a fast start, taking advantage of some control problems by Coppin State starter Devin Sutorius in the bottom of the first. Sutorius walked five men in the first inning, leading to three NSU runs. Tony Leite had the only hit in the inning, an RBI infield single. Mauricio knocked in a run with a groundout and Herrera drew a bases-loaded walk to account for another Spartan run.

CSU struck for a run in the second on Colin Dower's RBI double off NSU starter Jonathan Mauricio. Two more runs scored in the third thanks to an NSU error and Percell's sacrifice fly, tying the score at 3-3.

The Spartans manufactured two runs in the fifth to re-take the lead. A single by Denathan Dukes, an Eagle error and a walk to Brian Beard loaded the bases. Hall's sacrifice fly deep down the right field line scored Dukes. Leite would tack on his second run-scoring infield single later in the frame to make it 5-3.

Justin Lee added to the Spartans' lead in the sixth. Lee led off with a double and stole third, then trotted home on an error on the CSU catcher.

Bryant Miranda's RBI single in the seventh cut the NSU lead to 6-4.

Leite was 2-for-3 with two RBI for the Spartans. Miranda had three hits to lead the Eagles, who outhit NSU 12-8.
