BALTIMORE, Md. - The Norfolk State men's track and field team swept the top three spots in the 3,000 meter steeplechase over the weekend at the Morgan State Legacy Meet.

It turned out to be an abbreviated meet for the Spartans, as heavy rains affecting Baltimore made for poor racing conditions on Saturday and NSU coaches opted to leave early. Still, the Spartans made their mark in their brief stay. 

Freshmen Felix Kiprotich and Festus Bett as well as junior Ronald Korir took first through third places on Friday evening and qualified for the MEAC Outdoor Championship in the steeplechase. Kiprotich won with a time of 9 minutes, 32.97 seconds. Korir was close behind in 9:34.06, and Bett took third in 9:53.61.

Kiprotich also was runner-up in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:03.95.

Other highlights at Morgan State included the Spartans' win in the 4x100 meter relay. The quartet of Allan Frye, Michael-Thomas Brown, Rashad Ramsey and Jaylen Carr clocked a 41.92. Ramsey also won his heat and placed fourth overall in the 400-meter hurdles in 54.02, while teammate Jaylen Banks was fifth in the same event (54.29).

The Spartans had only a small contingent of athletes in field events. Among those, the top performance came via Da'Trail Hockaday, who finished fourth in the javelin throw (142 feet, 9 inches).

The Spartans are back in action this Saturday at the Virginia Grand Prix in Charlottesville.
