Spartans Snap 9-Game Skid vs. DSU, Move Into 1st-Place MEAC Tie

Lyons Leads 3 Spartans in Double Figures

Corey Lyons Led NSU with 15 Points, 10 in the 2nd Half

Box Score

NORFOLK, Va.
Corey Lyons (Bronx, N.Y.) scored 15 points, 10 in the second half, and Norfolk State moved into a first-place tie with Morgan State atop the MEAC standings with a 65-63 win over Delaware State on Saturday at Echols Hall.

The win was the fourth straight for the Spartans (13-10, 9-2 MEAC), matching their season high, and snapped a nine-game losing streak to Delaware State dating to the 2004 season. DSU had won six straight over NSU at Echols Hall since 2000.

DSU's Roy Bright, who scored a game-high 29 points, hit his seventh 3-pointer of the night to tie the game at 63-all with 3:19 left. But NSU center Larry Vickers (Virginia Beach, Va.) knocked down a jumper with 2:31 remaining to give the Spartans the lead for good, at 65-63.

The Hornets had several chances to tie or win the game after that, but suffered from two turnovers and three missed shots in the final two and a half minutes. Bright's potential winning 3-pointer with three seconds left fell short, and the Spartans ran out the clock.

Bright scored 16 points to stake DSU to a 34-30 halftime lead. The Hornets would lead by as many as six points in the second half, the last of which came at 42-36 with 16:06 left. But the Spartans had slam dunks on four straight possessions, two by Brandon Monroe (Raeford, N.C.), to tie the game at 45-all. Tony Murphy (Paterson, N.J.) then scored six straight NSU points to give his team its first lead of the half. Neither team led by more than three points for the final 14:29.

NSU shot 70 percent (16-of-23) from the floor in the second half and 58 percent (29-of-50) for the game. Murphy and Michael Deloach (Rocky Mount, N.C.) each added 13 points, with Deloach leading NSU with four assists.

The Spartans also got key contributions from Vickers and Monroe, who combined for 14 points and 15 rebounds. NSU enjoyed a 35-24 rebounding edge.

Donald Johnson, with 11 points, was the other double-figure scorer for DSU (10-13, 7-4).

NSU plays its final home game of the season Monday night when it hosts Maryland Eastern Shore at 8 p.m. The game will also be the final home contest in the careers of Murphy, Vickers and Rashid Cann (Greensboro, N.C.).
