Lee, Coles Capture Gold as NSU Men Place 5th at MEAC Indoor Championship

Meet Results

LANDOVER, Md. – Chris Lee broke his own school record in winning the shot put gold medal and Steve Coles sprinted to a victory in the 200 meters as the Norfolk State men's track and field team placed fifth at the 2016 MEAC Indoor Championship at the Prince George's Sports & Learning Complex on Saturday.

NSU finished with 66 points as a team. Bethune-Cookman won the men's title with 122 points, followed by North Carolina A&T (113), Maryland Eastern Shore (103.5), Hampton (100) and NSU.

The shot put turned into a two-man race between Lee and Hampton's Sulaiman Fared. Lee led after three attempts with a top throw of 54 feet, half an inch. Fared's fourth attempt went 54-1.25, but Lee answered with a toss of 54-2.5, breaking his own school record. Fared countered on his final attempt with a go-ahead throw of 55-2.25. But Lee also saved his best for last, topping Fared for the gold medal with a final effort of 55-3. It was Lee's first conference title in his first MEAC championship meet.

Coles also won his first career MEAC individual title. Coles clocked a time of 21.67 seconds Saturday, edging Hampton's Jasper Savoy (21.69) for first place in the 200 meters.

Elsewhere on the track Saturday, sophomore Haileyesus Demsie placed third in the 3,000 meters in a time of 8:48.08. Fellow sophomore Allan Frye took fifth in the 60-meter hurdles (8.15) and Marcus Anderson placed sixth (8.17). The 4x400 meter relay team of Coles, Frye, Rashad Ramsey and Justin Pinder earned a sixth-place finish to cap the meet (3:20.10).

In other field events, junior Willard Ward established a new indoor personal-best in the pole vault with a height of 14 feet, good for third place. Sophomore Shaw Barfield was sixth in the same event (12-0.5).

The Spartans have a month off before opening the outdoor season at the University of Virginia.
