NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – A trio of event titles and a slew of top-five finishes highlighted the first indoor track and field meet of the season for the Norfolk State men's squad on Saturday at the CNU Holiday Open.
The Spartans posted three wins at the meet. The 4x400 meter relay team of
Allan Frye,
Steve Coles,
Xavier Collins and
Rashad Ramsey won its event in 3 minutes, 25.10 seconds.
Jaylen Carr won the 200-meter dash in 22.30 seconds, and sophomore
Chris Lee won the shot put with a best throw of 52 feet, 8 inches.
NSU displayed its depth in the sprints and hurdles, taking three of the top five in the 200-meter dash and 60-meter hurdles and two of the top five places in the 60-meter dash.
Michael-Thomas Brown placed second in both the 60m (6.91) and 200m (22.40). In addition to his victory in the 200m, Carr was also third in the 60m in 6.93 seconds.
In the 60 hurdles, Frye placed second in 8.32 seconds, following closely by
Marcus Anderson in third (8.39) and
Ryan Turner in fifth (8.44). Collins placed fourth in both the 200m (22.71) and 400m (51.48).
Elsewhere on the track, freshman
Justin Pinder earned a third-place finish in the 600 meters in a time of 1:25.14.
In field events, sophomore
Joseph Boyd placed third in the high jump (6-4) and fifth in the triple jump (41-10.50).
Da'trail Hockaday and
Clifton Thompson placed fourth and fifth, respectively, in the weight throw. Hockaday's best attempt went 48-8 and Thompson's went 46-3.5.
The Spartans are now off for the remainder of the semester and holiday break before returning to action on Jan. 8-9 at the Penn State Relays.
